Agrilek Limited involved in pioneering Green Energy Projects

- Posted: 13/05/10

Agrilek is to play a key role in a pioneering scheme to convert farm crops into power.

A consortium, assembled by leading ‘Green Energy’ specialist Farmgen, has begun work on a £2.5million Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, at Carr Farm, near Warton in Lancashire.

The plant, should generate 800kW of carbon-neutral electricity, and is scheduled to come on-stream later this year. Agrilek’s role is to carry out connections to export electricity to the National Grid; providing enough continuous power for more than 1,000 homes.

The consortium includes a number of leading members of the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association, with process and technology business Monsal Limited supplying the AD expertise.

The Carr Farm plant is the first phase of a £30million pound investment to create the biggest AD “energy farming” expansion programme in the country. Construction on the second new plant in Silloth will commence later this year, with further sites already identified across Lancashire, Cumbria and Staffordshire.

With the UK Government's vision to see AD contributing up to 7.5% of the renewable energy needed to hit 2020 carbon reduction targets, future sites are currently being lined up throughout the UK.

Agrilek’s venture into the Biogas energy market should further benefit the company with continued growth and increased job security.

Spice plc, which has a turnover in excess of £300million and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, is a provider of outsourced infrastructure support services principally to the utility sector.  Its customers include EDF Energy, Untied Utilities and Yorkshire Water.  The company operates from more than 30 locations across the UK.

The acquisition of Agrilek significantly increases Freedom’s growth potential.  The combination of Agrilek’s strong market position and the financial strength of Spice plc is a compelling one which will secure the future of the company.

Agrilek currently employs 120 people, and has a turnover in excess of £10million. As part of the Freedom Group of Companies, we can look forward to the business growing, creating additional jobs and further stimulating the local economy.

Agrilek, will continue trading under the Agrilek name and the present directors Keith Wood and Ian Postlethwaite will continue to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business.

Keith Wood, Managing Director of Agrilek Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be joining Spice and particularly the Freedom Group of Companies.  We see this as a truly exciting new phase in the development of Agrilek Ltd and we believe our skill base will thrive going forward, creating new opportunities in a growing market for Energy Engineering Services”.
