Agrilek is to play a key role in a pioneering scheme to convert farm crops into power.
A consortium, assembled by leading ‘Green Energy’ specialist Farmgen, has begun work on a £2.5million Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, at Carr Farm, near Warton in Lancashire.
The plant, should generate 800kW of carbon-neutral electricity, and is scheduled to come on-stream later this year. Agrilek’s role is to carry out connections to export electricity to the National Grid; providing enough continuous power for more than 1,000 homes.
The consortium includes a number of leading members of the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association, with process and technology business Monsal Limited supplying the AD expertise.
The Carr Farm plant is the first phase of a £30million pound investment to create the biggest AD “energy farming” expansion programme in the country. Construction on the second new plant in Silloth will commence later this year, with further sites already identified across Lancashire, Cumbria and Staffordshire.
With the UK Government's vision to see AD contributing up to 7.5% of the renewable energy needed to hit 2020 carbon reduction targets, future sites are currently being lined up throughout the UK.
Agrilek’s venture into the Biogas energy market should further benefit the company with continued growth and increased job security.
Agrilek Limited is set for continued expansion after being acquired for an undisclosed sum by Spice plc.
As of Tuesday 14th July 2009, we officially became part of the
Freedom Group of Companies forming a new Engineering Services Division.
Spice plc, which has a turnover in excess of £300million and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, is a provider of outsourced infrastructure support services principally to the utility sector. Its customers include EDF Energy, Untied Utilities and Yorkshire Water. The company operates from more than 30 locations across the UK.
The acquisition of Agrilek significantly increases Freedom’s growth potential. The combination of Agrilek’s strong market position and the financial strength of Spice plc is a compelling one which will secure the future of the company.
Agrilek currently employs 120 people, and has a turnover in excess of £10million. As part of the Freedom Group of Companies, we can look forward to the business growing, creating additional jobs and further stimulating the local economy.
Agrilek, will continue trading under the Agrilek name and the present directors Keith Wood and Ian Postlethwaite will continue to be involved in the day-to-day running of the business.
Keith Wood, Managing Director of Agrilek Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be joining Spice and particularly the Freedom Group of Companies. We see this as a truly exciting new phase in the development of Agrilek Ltd and we believe our skill base will thrive going forward, creating new opportunities in a growing market for Energy Engineering Services”.
Safety Group Honoured
A SOUTH Cumbrian safety group has won an award.
The South Cumbria Occupational Health and Safety Group was honoured with the award for “Best support for Health and Safety Executive topics” at a ceremony held at the House of Lords in January.
It was part of the annual Alan Butler Awards for Excellence staged by Safety Groups UK supported by Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
The South Cumbria Occupational Health and Safety Group got the award for running a day-long seminar last year which picked up on all the current major safety themes being plugged by the government's HSE.
GREAT DAY: Pictured are SCOHSG chairman Martin Fishwick (Lancashire Police safety officer) and committee member/secretary Mark Holden (Agrilek HSE Manager) receiving the award presented by Lord Jordon of Bournville and ROSPA President.
Robin Rigg Off-Shore Wind Farm
Agrilek successfully completed the construction of the two Off-shore 132kV sub-stations for the Robin Rigg project for Areva T&D. This was another quality installation produced on-time and on-budget. A big thank you to all the team for their efforts to make this contract yet another success for the Renewables section, and further secure our place in the industry for the coming years.
This project is due to go live this year, Agrilek will offer further support to Eon to carry out specialist jointing and terminations to the sub-sea cabling and the final hook-ups off-shore.
On-Shore Wind Energy Projects
This year should provide a huge boost to Agrilek Ltd’s ever expanding portfolio of Wind Farm projects with over £10M of projects on the order books for the coming financial year. This will further reinforce our development plans for the on-going growth of the business.
Agrilek anticipate further significant growth for 2009/10 with technology development for the next generation of grid connections for Wind Farms over the next 5 years.
Wind Farm De-Commissioning
This year saw the further activities of Agrilek Mechanical Service, supported by the Renewables Team, in successful completion of our second de-commissioning and dismantling contract. This follows on from our success on the Isle of Gigha where we dismantled and re-commissioned 3 Vestas V27 turbines from Haverigg “A” wind farm to the island’s renewables project, which was a huge success story for the island. This latest de-commissioning project saw the dismantling of 4 No 750kVa Wind Master turbines. The units were dismantled in just a few days and the site re-instated for future developments. The de-commissioned machines are destined for a new generation project in Romania.
